Synopsis:
This book provides a comprehensive introduction to the principal analysis and characterization techniques that are used for determining the structure and properties of nanostructured materials. The goal is to give students and professionals who are working in nanotechnology a broad yet accessible overview of the theory and practice of characterization methods as they are applied to nanomaterials systems. The techniques covered are the primary methods for materials analysis (optical, X-ray, electron beam, ion beam, and scanning probe methods) but they are discussed specifically with their application to nanomaterials. In addition to covering the theory and practice of these techniques, this book will also discuss the issues and limitations that arise when characterization tools are applied to nanoscale materials. This balanced presentation of the both the strengths and the shortcomings of experimental approaches (enhanced with a fundamental review of both materials science and measurement technology) will be beneficial to both new students and established professionals who are working with nanostructured systems.
